Planting hints
How to plant your espalier
Remember the more care you take now the better the start for your
plant to establish itself. So prepare an area larger than your plant
by adding compost and a little fertilizer to the soil and fork it
in well.
Now you are ready to plant your espalier.
Dig a hole larger than your plant, remember to break up any hard
soil at the bottom of the hole to improve drainage.
If you are training your espalier to a new trellis, remove all of
the ‘D’ clips now and pull out the old pine trellis from
the pot.
This part is easier if you have some help.
Lean down and hold the stem of your plant just above the soil level,
this way the trellis can be supported by your outstretched arm and
shoulder. Tap off the pot. Place plant into your prepared hole.
Remember any graft point must sit above the final soil line (and
mulch line)
When you are happy with the position of your plant back fill the
hole. Remember to keep all graft points above the final soil (and
mulch) level
Rearrange, clip/tie your plant to your trellis. Always use flexible
ties that will allow for growth. Avoid string or wire as these may
restrict growth of your plant. Prune any unwanted branches.
